The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has urged global nations to follow Russia’s lead in recognizing its government, following Moscow’s official acknowledgment on July 4, 2025. Russia became the first country to formally recognize the Taliban-led administration, nearly four years after its establishment. The decision, announced by the Kremlin, was initiated by President Vladimir Putin based on recommendations from Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Russia’s ambassador to Kabul, Dmitry Zhirnov, highlighted the move as a step toward strengthening bilateral ties, noting Russia’s historical recognition of Afghanistan’s independence over a century ago.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the Islamic Emirate’s spokesperson, welcomed Russia’s decision, describing it as a positive step and encouraging other nations to engage with Afghanistan to foster diplomatic relations. Suhail Shaheen, the Islamic Emirate’s envoy in Qatar, expressed optimism that more countries might recognize the government in the coming weeks or months, citing ongoing discussions with regional powers. The Taliban has maintained active diplomatic channels with countries like China and Pakistan, despite most nations withholding formal recognition due to concerns over human rights, particularly regarding women’s rights and education.

This development coincides with Afghanistan’s efforts to strengthen economic and trade ties, as evidenced by recent talks with Chinese and Pakistani envoys. However, challenges remain, with the United Nations emphasizing the need for a clear roadmap to normalize ties, citing issues like press freedom and humanitarian aid access. The Islamic Emirate’s call for recognition reflects its pursuit of international legitimacy amid ongoing domestic and regional complexities.
