The Afghan Ministry of Public Health has initiated a four-day polio vaccination campaign targeting approximately 7.3 million children under five across 19 provinces. This effort, spanning 187 districts, aims to protect young children from the poliovirus, a disease that can cause lifelong paralysis. The campaign, which began on July 21, 2025, is part of ongoing efforts to eradicate polio in one of the few countries where it remains endemic.

Health officials are focusing on reaching children in both urban and remote areas, ensuring widespread coverage. The initiative includes door-to-door vaccinations and mobile clinics to access underserved communities. Local organizations, alongside international partners, are supporting the campaign to strengthen its reach and effectiveness. Community leaders and health workers are also raising awareness about the importance of immunization to combat the disease.

Despite challenges such as logistical difficulties in rural regions and security concerns, the campaign reflects Afghanistan’s commitment to eliminating polio. Recent posts on X highlight public support for the initiative, with many emphasizing the need for sustained efforts to protect future generations. This campaign follows previous efforts, including a 2023 drive that reached over 9 million children, showing a consistent push toward polio eradication.
