The Bangladesh measles outbreak has now claimed 1,048 lives, after two more children died from measles-like symptoms in the 24 hours leading up to 8:00am on Friday. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) classified both of the latest deaths as suspected.
Latest Deaths Recorded in Dhaka and Chittagong
The two new fatalities were reported in the Dhaka and Chittagong divisions, with one death recorded in Dhaka district and one in Chittagong district. Both were classified as suspected rather than confirmed.
The Directorate General of Health Services said the total number of suspected measles deaths has risen to 948. The number of confirmed measles deaths remained unchanged at 100, as no new confirmed deaths were reported during the period. Together, the two categories make up the overall toll of 1,048.
Bangladesh Measles Outbreak: Case Figures
The health authorities recorded 1,245 new suspected measles cases in the 24 hours to Friday morning. That brings the cumulative number of suspected measles cases to 177,725. Over the same period, 52 new confirmed cases were reported, taking the total number of confirmed infections to 20,395.
The distinction between the two categories is significant. Suspected cases are those in which patients present with measles-like symptoms, while confirmed cases are those that have been verified as measles. The figures show that the overwhelming majority of recorded cases and deaths in the outbreak remain in the suspected category.
Hospitalisations and Recoveries
Since 15 March 2026, a total of 156,718 suspected measles patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country, according to the DGHS. Of those, 150,633 have recovered and been discharged.
The figures indicate that most hospitalised patients have recovered. However, the continued daily reporting of new deaths, most recently involving children, shows that the outbreak remains active. The daily count of new suspected cases also remains above one thousand.
Outlook
Officials have not indicated when the outbreak is expected to subside. The DGHS continues to publish daily updates on cases, hospitalisations and deaths. The latest figures confirm that, even as recoveries mount, the Bangladesh measles outbreak continues to take lives.
