On April 28, 2026, India is preparing to deploy its fourth Russian S-400 air defense system, expected to arrive by mid-May. This deployment is a significant step in strengthening India’s military capabilities against regional adversaries.
The Modi administration approved the acquisition of five additional S-400 systems, with the current system set to be stationed in Rajasthan to fortify defense against Pakistan. The Indian Air Force completed the pre-dispatch inspection by April 18, confirming the system’s readiness for shipment from Russia.
The S-400 system has proven its effectiveness in Operation Sindoor, where it successfully neutralized multiple aerial threats from Pakistan. During the operation, Pakistan relocated its aerial assets to avoid the S-400’s extensive range, highlighting the system’s strategic value.
Looking forward, the fifth S-400 system is anticipated to arrive in November, focusing on the middle sector bordering China. India is also exploring a partnership with the private sector to establish a maintenance facility, potentially involving technology transfer.
In addition to the S-400, India plans to acquire 12 Pantsir air defense systems from Russia and manufacture 40 more domestically, further enhancing its defense capabilities.
