India-Iran Tensions Escalate Following Strait of Hormuz Incident

India Iran Conflict: On April 19, 2026, two Indian crude oil tankers, Jag Arnav and Sanmar Herald, were attacked by the Iranian Navy in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil transit route. The incident, which resulted in no casualties, has sparked heightened tensions between India and Iran.

The attack led to the shattering of one of the cabins’ glass on the vessels, prompting India to issue a stern warning to Iran regarding potential consequences. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has summoned the Iranian envoy to express its deep displeasure over the incident.

Discrepancies have emerged between the Iranian diplomatic mission in India and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), with the latter reportedly seeking to impose a toll on ships navigating the strait amidst ongoing conflicts with the United States and Israel.

The Iranian warship IRIS Lavan remains docked at Kochi port, India, following its refuge request after another Iranian vessel was sunk by a US submarine near Sri Lanka in March. Approximately 120 crew members have been repatriated, while essential personnel remain to maintain the ship.

India, a major stakeholder in the Strait of Hormuz due to its energy import dependence, has firmly rejected any toll payments, emphasizing the importance of open and free navigation. The incident comes shortly after a temporary reopening of the strait following a US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.
