The Jio Platforms IPO closed its bidding window on Friday, October 23, with subscriptions surging on the final day as investors backed the $3.2 billion offering from billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s telecom and digital arm. It is India’s largest initial public offering and Mr. Ambani’s first in two decades, according to Reuters.

Subscription Climbs Through the Final Day

Demand built steadily across the three days. Reuters reported that public subscriptions had crossed seven times the shares on offer earlier on Friday, and that total demand exceeded $16 billion if bids were largely placed at the top of the Rs 1,119 price band. That estimate rests on an assumption about bid prices and is not an official figure.

Exchange data later in the day showed a higher number. According to cumulative National Stock Exchange (NSE) data cited by Upstox, the Jio Platforms IPO was subscribed 22.19 times by 7 pm, with bids for roughly 438 crore shares against about 19.75 crore shares on offer. At 3 pm, the issue had been subscribed 12.55 times, according to HDFC Sky. Earlier in the issue, subscription stood at 3.04 times on day one and 5.40 times on day two.

The offering had a rare start on Wednesday, when it was fully subscribed within two hours of opening, Reuters reported.

Which Investors Drove the Demand

Institutional investors led the way. Data cited by HDFC Sky showed qualified institutional buyers subscribing 70.55 times their reserved portion by 7 pm, while non-institutional investors were at 14.00 times. Retail investors bid for 2.72 times their quota, the employee portion was subscribed 2.93 times, and the quota for existing Reliance shareholders drew bids for 7.60 times.

The pattern shows strong appetite among large investors, with more measured participation from individuals. The retail quota was subscribed well above its allocation, though by a smaller multiple than the institutional segment.

Why the Jio Platforms IPO Matters

Reuters described the listing as a test of investor appetite for large offerings at a time when stocks linked to artificial intelligence face increased scrutiny. The company counts Meta Platforms and Alphabet’s Google among its investors and is led by Mr. Ambani’s eldest son, Akash Ambani.

The issue size is up to Rs 30,213 crore, according to HDFC Sky. Jio Platforms operates a technology platform that combines digital connectivity with consumer and enterprise digital services, as described in Upstox’s report.

Allotment and Listing Timeline

The next steps follow a fixed calendar. Allotment is expected to be finalised on October 26, according to Upstox. HDFC Sky lists refunds and the credit of shares for October 27, with a tentative listing date of October 28 on the BSE and NSE. Investors can check allotment status on the NSE website or through the registrar, KFin Technologies, using their PAN, application number or demat account details.

What to Watch

Heavy oversubscription does not guarantee a strong market debut. Indian IPOs that drew robust demand have at times listed below their issue price, a point raised in market commentary earlier in the year. Much will depend on conditions in the broader market and on how investors value the company on its first trading day.

Neither the Reuters report nor the subscription data indicated how shares would be priced at listing, and none of the sources offered a forecast. This article is for information only and is not investment advice.

For now, the final-day surge shows that the Jio Platforms IPO has cleared its first hurdle, with books heavily oversubscribed and attention turning to allotment and the October 28 listing.
