Sri Lanka Dengue Outbreak: Military Drones Join the Fight Against the Country’s Worst Crisis in a Decade

The Sri Lanka dengue outbreak has become the country’s most severe public health emergency in nearly ten years, prompting the government to bring in an unlikely tool for disease control: military drones. As infections climb past 77,000 cases and the death toll reaches 56 this year, health authorities are combining high-tech surveillance with old-fashioned ground inspections to get ahead of a mosquito-borne disease that shows no sign of slowing down.

What Is Driving the Sri Lanka Dengue Outbreak?

Dengue is a viral infection spread to humans through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, which breed in stagnant water found in everyday containers such as buckets, vases, discarded tyres, and flowerpot trays. More than a quarter of this year’s cases were reported in July alone, a sharp spike that health officials link directly to a cyclone that struck Sri Lanka last December. The storm left behind scattered debris and pooled water across the island, creating ideal breeding conditions for Aedes mosquitoes in both urban and rural areas.

Kapila Kannangara, acting director general of the National Dengue Control Unit, has described the situation as putting enormous strain on health workers. He noted that roughly three-quarters of current cases are linked to the Denv-2 strain, which tends to spread more aggressively and produce more severe illness than other dengue strains. Because there are four distinct dengue strains and infection with one does not protect against the others, a person can be infected multiple times in their life, sometimes with worsening outcomes on subsequent infections.

How Drones Are Helping Control the Outbreak

To manage the scale of the crisis, Sri Lanka’s air force has deployed drones to scan rooftops, construction sites, schools, and residential areas from above, searching for pools of stagnant water that ground teams might otherwise miss. This aerial approach allows officials to cover far more territory in less time than traditional door-to-door inspections alone, and it is proving especially useful in densely packed urban neighborhoods like Colombo, where cases have concentrated most heavily.

The drone campaign works alongside police-led physical inspections of homes and businesses. According to health ministry figures, nearly 11,000 mosquito breeding sites have already been cleared this month, while more than 4,000 properties have been fined for harboring conditions that allow mosquitoes to breed. Officials say the dual strategy, combining aerial surveillance with hands-on enforcement, is intended to catch breeding sites early before they multiply into larger outbreaks.

Hospitals across the country have also expanded bed capacity and extended working hours to keep pace with rising patient numbers. Sri Lanka’s healthcare system had an advantage going into this crisis, with roughly four hospital beds per 1,000 people compared to a global average of under three, according to World Bank figures. Even so, public health workers say they are being stretched to their limit by both the volume and severity of cases this year.

Dengue Fever Symptoms and Risks

Many people infected with dengue experience no symptoms at all, which can make the disease difficult to track and contain. Those who do become symptomatic often report high fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, nausea, and skin rashes. In most cases, symptoms resolve within a week or two with rest and hydration.

However, a smaller share of patients develop a more serious form of the illness, sometimes called severe dengue or dengue haemorrhagic fever, which can cause internal bleeding and, in the worst cases, death. Because there is currently no universal vaccine for dengue, treatment mainly focuses on managing symptoms, often with paracetamol for pain and fever. Patients who develop warning signs of severe illness typically require close hospital monitoring, since complications can escalate quickly.

A Global Pattern, Not Just a Local One

While dengue has long been associated with tropical climates, rising global temperatures are allowing Aedes mosquitoes to establish themselves in regions where they were previously rare, including parts of Europe and the Mediterranean. The World Health Organization has reported that global dengue cases surged from roughly 500,000 in the year 2000 to 14.4 million in 2024, underscoring how the disease’s geographic footprint is expanding well beyond its traditional strongholds.

Health officials in Sri Lanka expect case numbers to ease somewhat in August as monsoon rains taper off, but they are also warning of a possible second wave later in the year. Sri Lanka experiences two monsoon seasons annually, and rainfall returning in November could once again create the standing water conditions that allow Aedes mosquitoes to breed and the outbreak to accelerate again.

What Comes Next

Authorities are also weighing whether a dengue vaccine should be introduced more broadly if the outbreak continues to threaten levels last seen in 2017, one of Sri Lanka’s worst recorded dengue years. For now, the combination of drone surveillance, ground inspections, and public fines for uncleared breeding sites represents the country’s primary line of defense.

The Sri Lanka dengue outbreak illustrates how a mosquito-borne disease can escalate quickly following extreme weather events, and how technology like drones can play a meaningful role in modern public health response. As the country works to bring infection numbers down before the next monsoon season, health officials continue to stress that eliminating standing water around homes, schools, and businesses remains one of the simplest and most effective tools available to the public.
