Tamil Nadu projects totalling 436 were outlined at Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s first Cabinet meeting in Chennai on Friday, June 5, 2026, with ministers asked to prepare implementation plans for department-wise schemes and long-term governance goals.
Tamil Nadu projects reviewed at first Cabinet meeting
Tamil Nadu’s first Cabinet meeting under Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has outlined a broad roadmap of 436 projects and governance goals across state departments, according to Energy Resources and Law Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar.
The meeting was held at the state Secretariat in Chennai on Friday, June 5, 2026. It was the first Cabinet session after the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam-led government took office following the 2026 Assembly election.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Kumar said the chief minister had set specific targets for departments and asked ministers to work with senior officials to prepare implementation plans. The plans are expected to include detailed execution strategies, timelines and monitoring mechanisms.
Kumar said the roadmap was framed around welfare, development and administrative reform. It includes proposals linked to youth employment, women’s welfare, farmers, agricultural labourers, fishermen, education, infrastructure, healthcare, environmental protection and transparent governance.
No full official list of all 436 projects was available at the time of writing.
Tamil Nadu projects grouped under ‘Vetri Thamizhagam’
The Cabinet’s roadmap was presented under the title “Vetri Thamizhagam”, according to reports of the minister’s briefing.
The vision document is reported to be divided into 10 broad pillars and further sub-categories. These include Tamil identity and pride, dignified living and social security, women’s welfare, youth welfare, farmers’ and fishermen’s welfare, world-class education, economic growth, healthcare and environment, infrastructure, and honest and transparent governance.
The New Indian Express reported that the pillars include 52 vision statements on Tamil identity and pride, 93 on dignified living and social security, 24 on women’s welfare, 18 on youth welfare, 50 on farmers, agricultural labourers and fishermen, 20 on education, 99 on prosperity, 22 on healthcare and environment, 32 on infrastructure and 26 on transparent governance.
The minister said the chief minister had asked ministers and department secretaries to assess the proposals and prepare action plans for implementation. A later presentation to the chief minister is expected before final approvals and timelines are fixed.
Anti-drug campaign among early priorities
The Cabinet meeting also discussed action against narcotics and banned substances, with the government identifying a “drug-free Tamil Nadu” as one of its priorities.
Kumar said the administration had intensified enforcement against illegal drug networks and banned tobacco products, including gutkha. Reports citing the minister said raids and shop closures had taken place in Madurai and other areas.
The minister also said the state had closed 117 TASMAC liquor shops.
The government has not yet released a detailed anti-drug action plan setting out enforcement targets, health interventions, rehabilitation measures or budget allocations.
Welfare and employment focus
The 436-project roadmap includes proposals aimed at youth, women, farmers, fishermen and other welfare groups.
According to the minister’s briefing, departments have been asked to convert the broad goals into implementable schemes. This suggests the Cabinet meeting functioned as an initial policy-setting exercise rather than a final approval of every project.
The government is expected to focus on employment generation, welfare delivery, public service efficiency and infrastructure expansion. However, project costs, funding sources and budgetary provisions were not disclosed in the reports reviewed.
The roadmap also appears to include commitments made by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam during the election campaign.
Background
C Joseph Vijay’s government took office after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election. The Election Commission of India’s published results showed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam winning 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, making it the largest party.
The 2026 election marked a major shift in Tamil Nadu politics, where the DMK and AIADMK had dominated state governments for decades. Vijay, a film actor turned politician, founded TVK before entering full electoral politics.
The first Cabinet meeting was therefore closely watched as an indication of the new administration’s governance priorities. The 436-project roadmap gives an early outline of the government’s stated direction, but the details still depend on department-level plans, formal approvals and budgetary support.
For South India’s largest industrial and social welfare states, the practical test will be whether the new government can convert campaign promises and broad vision statements into funded, time-bound schemes.
What’s next
Tamil Nadu ministers and department secretaries are expected to prepare detailed implementation plans for the 436 projects and submit them for further review by the chief minister.
The next key steps include publication of the full project list, department-wise timelines, budget allocations and performance monitoring mechanisms. The government will also need to clarify whether the proposals require Cabinet approval, legislative approval or inclusion in future budget documents.
The Tamil Nadu projects roadmap will now be judged by how quickly the new administration converts its first Cabinet vision into measurable policy delivery.
