Telangana has emerged as the state with the highest number of human trafficking cases in India for the year 2024, recording 423 incidents. This figure represents nearly 20% of the total cases across the country, which amounted to 2,135 according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
The increase in cases marks a significant rise of 25.9% from the previous year, when Telangana recorded 336 cases. The state’s crime rate for trafficking stands at 1.1 cases per lakh population, the highest in the nation and well above the national average of 0.2.
The profile of victims in Telangana reveals a troubling trend, with 765 out of 814 victims being adults over the age of 18. Women accounted for the vast majority, with 792 identified as female. The primary motive behind these crimes was ‘sexual exploitation for prostitution,’ affecting 770 victims.
Historically, Telangana has been grappling with trafficking issues, but the recent surge in numbers calls for immediate policy interventions. The state’s charge-sheeting rate of 99% exceeds the national average, reflecting efficient law enforcement but also highlighting the severity of the issue.
Looking forward, the situation demands robust policy shifts and increased awareness to combat trafficking. As the state continues to lead in such grim statistics, comprehensive strategies are essential to reverse the trend.
