The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has issued a strong call for action following a disturbing increase in violence against children across Bangladesh. Reports indicate a rise in brutal incidents, including the rape and murder of children in supposedly safe environments.
UNICEF Representative in Bangladesh, Rana Flowers, emphasized the critical need for enhanced measures to prevent child and gender-based violence nationwide. She stated that the alarming trends in 2026 necessitate immediate action to close gaps in prevention, reporting, and institutional safeguarding.
Flowers pointed out the culture of impunity enjoyed by perpetrators and stressed the importance of accountability across various sectors, including schools, madrasas, and workplaces. She also highlighted the necessity for psychosocial support for victims and their families.
UNICEF’s statement urged community members to actively report incidents of violence and utilize protection services like the Child Helpline 1098. The organization called for media and social media users to respect victim privacy and focus on advocating for improved protection systems.
