The Agargaon metro station blast occurred on Monday night, when a crude bomb exploded beneath the elevated station in the capital. Police said no one was injured and have begun examining footage from nearby areas to identify those responsible for the attack.

Details of the Agargaon Metro Station Blast

According to Dhaka Tribune, police rushed to the scene after receiving reports of an explosion shortly after 8:30pm. Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, told the newspaper that officers found that “miscreants had detonated a cocktail bomb and fled.” The term cocktail is commonly used in Bangladesh for a locally made crude bomb. He added that police were reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area in an effort to trace the perpetrators.

Accounts of the timing differ slightly. The Business Standard reported that the explosion beneath Agargaon metro station took place at around 9:15pm, and it quoted the same police officer as saying that no one was hurt and that investigators were working to establish who was behind the incidents. The outlet also reported that the station area falls under the jurisdiction of Kafrul Police Station, which would investigate the incident.

A Second Explosion in Sobhanbagh

The Agargaon metro station blast was not the only explosion in Dhaka that evening. The Business Standard reported that a separate crude bomb went off at about 8:30pm beneath a footbridge in front of Dhanmondi Government Boys’ High School in Sobhanbagh. No casualties were reported in either incident, according to the outlet, which described the two blasts as separate events.

A Pattern of Crude Bomb Incidents in Dhaka

Monday’s incidents add to a series of crude bomb explosions that have unsettled the capital in recent weeks. On 18 September, explosions were reported in Jatrabari, Malibagh, Agargaon and Mohakhali, leaving at least one person injured, according to Dhaka Tribune. Jagonews24 counted 14 blasts that day across locations including Malibagh, Agargaon, Mohakhali, Jatrabari, Babubazar, the area in front of the Bangladesh Television building and the Moghbazar intersection.

On 10 October, a crude bomb exploded outside the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon in a late-night attack involving two people on a motorcycle, bdnews24 reported. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s bomb disposal unit defused a second, unexploded device, and Jagonews24 reported that police had received information that the suspects fled towards Kafrul via Agargaon.

Agargaon itself has seen similar incidents before. Blasts were reported there on 15 November 2025, including one beneath the metro rail station outside the IDB building, according to bdnews24, and later incidents involved devices found on the metro track near Kazipara. None of the reports reviewed for this article established who was responsible for Monday’s explosions.

Why Attacks Near Metro Infrastructure Draw Concern

The Dhaka Metro Rail is one of the busiest and most visible pieces of public infrastructure in the capital, and Agargaon is among the stations on MRT Line 6, which opened in December 2022. Even a small explosion beneath an elevated station can cause alarm among passengers and pedestrians, as well as raising questions about the adequacy of security around transport hubs. The reports reviewed did not say whether train services were affected on Monday night.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has previously said it strengthened security across the city, with increased patrols and surveillance, after a run of explosions in September, according to a report by News On AIR. Whether those measures will be reinforced around metro stations after the latest incident has not yet been announced.

What Happens Next

For now, the investigation rests largely on CCTV footage and on witness accounts from people near the scene. The Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station has confirmed that officers are reviewing recordings from the surrounding areas, while Kafrul Police Station is expected to take responsibility for the case in view of the station’s location. No arrests or claims of responsibility had been reported in the coverage consulted at the time of writing.

Residents and commuters across Dhaka will be watching closely to see whether investigators can identify the individuals behind the Agargaon metro station blast and the Sobhanbagh explosion, and whether a pattern emerges that could help prevent further attacks.
