The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has achieved a significant victory in the Punjab civic body elections, securing more than 48% of the wards. The results, announced on May 30, 2026, have been interpreted as a strong endorsement of the ruling party’s governance under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
According to the Punjab State Election Commission, Aam Aadmi Party won 954 out of 1,977 wards. The Congress followed with 393 wards, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 192 and 172 wards, respectively. Independent candidates claimed 251 wards, and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) managed seven. Results for eight wards remain pending.
AAP’s decisive victories were evident in municipal corporations such as Moga, Barnala, Bathinda, and Batala, and it emerged as the largest party in Mohali. The Congress dominated Kapurthala, while the BJP led in Pathankot and Abohar.
The elections are viewed as a precursor to the 2027 Assembly polls, with Chief Minister Mann stating that the results reflect public approval of the government’s development initiatives and a rejection of divisive politics. AAP’s national convener, Arvind Kejriwal, expressed gratitude to voters for the party’s success, labeling it a ‘spectacular’ victory.
Despite the triumph, opposition parties accused the AAP of misusing official machinery during the elections. The polls, held on May 26, used traditional ballot papers. As the political landscape evolves, the AAP’s performance sets a significant tone for the upcoming 2027 elections.
