On May 19, 2026, the government of Bangladesh announced a comprehensive security overhaul at the Bangladesh Secretariat, involving the transfer of 169 police personnel and the introduction of AI surveillance systems. This move comes amidst growing concerns over the security of the Prime Minister and the potential leakage of sensitive state information from the nation’s highest administrative center.
The Ministry of Home Affairs spearheaded the reshuffle, affecting officers responsible for gate security, ministry protection, and armed bodyguard assignments for senior officials. Lists of reassigned personnel have been finalized and forwarded to the Police Headquarters and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner for implementation.
According to Md Jashim Uddin, joint secretary of the Home Ministry, the decision forms part of a broader effort to enhance security around the Secretariat, where key ministries and the Prime Minister’s office are located. AI-powered surveillance cameras will be installed at 99 locations within the complex, complemented by advanced baggage scanners and modern detection systems at the main entry gates.
Security analysts highlight that prolonged postings in sensitive government facilities can lead to vulnerabilities due to personnel forming informal connections with external groups. Retired Lieutenant General Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman emphasized the importance of evaluating each officer’s service record and competence individually to avoid unfair blanket transfers.
Future appointments will prioritize personnel with strong security clearances and professional records, particularly given the Prime Minister’s frequent presence in Building No. 1. Further changes are anticipated for constables and inspectors assigned to Secretariat security duties.
