On May 14, 2026, Bangladesh and the United States signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for strategic energy cooperation at the Department of Energy in Washington, DC. This agreement is seen as a historic milestone in the relationship between the two nations.

The MoU was signed by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman. This partnership comes at a time when global energy security is under threat due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, highlighting the need for diversified energy sources.

The agreement aims to bolster Bangladesh’s long-term energy security by exploring various energy sources such as oil, gas, geothermal, and bioenergy. It also facilitates the import of US LNG and LPG at competitive prices, enhancing the country’s energy sustainability.

Foreign Minister Rahman expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and President Donald Trump for their support in realizing this initiative. He described the MoU as a significant step forward in Bangladesh-US relations.

Looking ahead, this cooperation is expected to lead to capacity building, knowledge exchange, and new opportunities for both nations in the energy sector. The collaboration underscores the strategic importance of energy security in global diplomacy.
