The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has officially approved the acquisition of Pakistan International Airlines Corporation Limited (PIA) by PIA Equity Limited, a special purpose vehicle formed by a consortium. This consortium includes prominent entities such as Arif Habib Corporation, Fatima Fertiliser, Lake City Holdings, City Schools, and AKD Group.
This acquisition is a significant move in the government’s ongoing privatization initiative. The consortium emerged as the successful bidder through a competitive process managed by the Privatisation Commission, marking a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s aviation history.
The CCP’s evaluation focused on various aspects of the aviation sector, including domestic and international passenger air transport, cargo services, and aviation-related technical services. The assessment revealed that Pakistan’s aviation market remains competitive, especially on international routes, with strong participation from global carriers such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad Airways.
Despite operational challenges leading to a decline in PIA’s market share, the domestic market continues to exhibit active competition with airlines like Air Blue, Air Sial, Fly Jinnah, and Serene Air. The transaction was deemed a conglomerate merger with no significant competition concerns, as it neither creates nor strengthens a dominant position in the market.
Looking forward, this acquisition is expected to invigorate the aviation sector in Pakistan, potentially leading to enhanced service offerings and increased competition among domestic and international carriers.
