On May 22, 2026, Chennai Metro Rail announced substantial savings through its solar power initiative, covering 22% of its non-train electricity needs. This achievement spans the 54 km Phase-I and Phase-I extension network.

The Chennai Metro Rail has installed 10.77 MWp of solar power across 36 locations, including car parks and station rooftops. Daily, 51,000 kWh of solar energy is generated, contributing to the network’s 4 lakh kWh daily requirement.

Officials highlighted that while solar energy supports non-traction power needs like air-conditioning and lighting, train operations require traction power. Regenerative braking technology recovers 34% of energy during train braking.

The solar installations save an estimated ₹5.6 crore annually, with plans to expand capacity by 2 MWp for Phase-I and 10 MWp for Corridor 4 of Phase-II. This expansion is seen as crucial for further reducing operational costs.
