Chhattisgarh is set to launch its Census 2027 with over 62,000 personnel deployed to conduct the exercise digitally for the first time. The process will begin on May 1, 2026, and will be carried out in two phases, according to state officials.

State Additional Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Pingua announced that the first phase, focusing on house listing and housing census, will occur from May 1 to May 30, 2026. The second phase, involving population enumeration, is scheduled for February 2027.

For the first time, the Census will offer an optional self-enumeration feature, allowing residents to submit their details online between April 16 and April 30, 2026. A unique self-enumeration ID will be generated for verification by enumerators during household visits.

Enumerators will use a mobile application to collect data from households, addressing 33 questions related to housing and amenities. The data collection is governed by the Census Act 1948 and Census Rules 1990, ensuring confidentiality and exclusive use for development planning.

The Census 2027 marks the 16th series in India and the eighth since Independence, covering 33 districts, 195 urban bodies, 252 tehsils, and nearly 20,000 villages in Chhattisgarh. A toll-free helpline will be available from April 16, 2026, to assist citizens in the process.
