China has expressed its support for Pakistan’s role in mediation between the United States and Iran amidst ongoing tensions in the Middle East. On May 26, 2026, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that negotiations between the U.S. and Iran are crucial, with Pakistan playing an active mediating role.

During a press conference, Wang Yi emphasized China’s backing of Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, following his meeting with Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan. The Chinese Foreign Minister also acknowledged the efforts made by both the United States and Iran to resolve their differences.

China, currently presiding over the UN Security Council for May, hosted a debate on strengthening the UN-centred international system. Wang Yi, who met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, reiterated the importance of continued negotiations to achieve peace in the Middle East.

Wang’s remarks coincide with U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham’s criticism of Pakistan’s role as a mediator, citing concerns over Pakistan’s relations with Israel. Despite these criticisms, Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khwaja Asif has expressed reluctance to join the Abraham Accords.
