China will not have high-level representation at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi on May 14-15, 2026, due to ‘scheduling reasons,’ according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The absence coincides with U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will remain in Beijing during Trump’s visit, prompting the Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, to attend the BRICS meeting in his stead. The Foreign Ministry emphasized China’s commitment to BRICS cooperation, expressing readiness to support India in hosting the event.
The meeting follows an April gathering of BRICS Deputy Foreign Ministers and Special Envoys in New Delhi, which ended without a joint statement due to disagreements over the West Asian conflict. This context highlights the challenges facing BRICS unity.
As the BRICS nations convene, the geopolitical landscape is further complicated by Trump’s visit to China, potentially influencing future diplomatic engagements and regional alignments.
