India-Cyprus Partnership: On May 22, 2026, India and Cyprus elevated their bilateral relations by forming a strategic partnership and launching a joint task force on counter-terrorism. The announcement came after a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides in New Delhi.

During the talks, President Christodoulides expressed gratitude for India’s consistent support for Cyprus’s reunification efforts and endorsed India’s bid for a permanent seat in a reformed United Nations Security Council. Prime Minister Modi highlighted the deepening economic ties, noting that Cypriot investment in India has nearly doubled over the past decade.

The discussions led to several Memorandums of Understanding aimed at enhancing cooperation in digital infrastructure, fintech, and research. Both nations also agreed on a comprehensive Migration and Mobility Agreement and a Social Security Agreement to protect the rights of professionals working between the two countries.

In addition, the two leaders agreed to increase defense collaboration focusing on cyber security, maritime awareness, and counter-terrorism networks. The formation of a Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism marks a significant step in addressing radicalization and cross-border threats.

Looking ahead, the partnership is expected to foster further economic growth and security cooperation, with both nations committed to advancing the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement.
