India has solidified its economic relationships with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the European Union (EU) through new trade agreements aimed at reducing over-dependence on certain countries, according to Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide. The agreements, he stated, are complementary and crucial for India’s growing economy.

Norway and India, both maritime nations, have faced challenges due to conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia. These challenges underscore the importance of a rules-based international order, which both countries support. Eide highlighted the strategic partnership between Norway and India, particularly in green technology and sustainable economic growth.

The Norwegian minister’s discussions with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also covered geopolitical issues such as the Strait of Hormuz and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Eide expressed Norway’s reservations about the extension of the waiver on US sanctions against Russian oil purchases, urging India to reinforce the importance of international law and sovereignty.

Norway’s relationship with India is further strengthened by digital cooperation agreements. Eide noted India’s dominance in the tech sector, emphasizing the necessity of collaboration in digitalization to enhance governance and societal progress.

As part of the European Free Trade Association, Norway was among the first to secure a trade agreement with India, a move seen as a diplomatic success. The upcoming EU-India trade agreement, expected by the end of the year, will further integrate India into European value chains, benefiting both regions economically. Eide concluded that these agreements are vital for maintaining economic interdependence while avoiding over-reliance on any single country.
