India-Germany Defence Cooperation: India and Germany are poised to enhance their military relationship by signing a defence industrial cooperation roadmap during Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s official visit to Germany from April 21 to April 23. This visit marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.

The discussions will emphasize enhancing defence industrial collaboration, military-to-military engagements, and exploring emerging domains such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and drones, according to the defence ministry’s statement. This visit is notable as it is the first by an Indian defence minister to Germany in seven years, following Nirmala Sitharaman’s visit in February 2019.

A major highlight of the visit is the impending finalization of the ₹70,000-crore Project 75I, which involves building next-generation conventional submarines in India. Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited and German company thyssenkrupp Marine Systems will collaborate to construct six advanced submarines, enhancing India’s naval capabilities.

These submarines, a variant of the HDW Class 214 vessels, will feature air-independent propulsion systems, significantly increasing underwater endurance and reducing detection risk. The technology transfer from thyssenkrupp to India aligns with the country’s goal of self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

During the visit, Singh will engage in bilateral talks with his German counterpart Boris Pistorius, and other senior leaders. An agreement for cooperation in UN Peacekeeping Operations Training is also anticipated, reflecting the strong strategic partnership between the two countries.

India is also considering joining a global consortium to develop a sixth-generation fighter aircraft, ensuring the Indian Air Force remains at the forefront of air combat capabilities. This initiative aligns with India’s Defence Forces Vision 2047, aiming to transform its military into a world-class force by its centenary of independence in 2047. The roadmap includes establishing cyber and space commands and a national air defence shield, adapting to the rapid technological advancements in warfare.
