On April 15, 2026, Karnataka approved a substantial infrastructure project to lay underground power cables in Mangaluru and Ullal, costing approximately ₹293 crore. This initiative is set to modernize the electrical network in these regions.
The underground power cables project, announced by Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker and Mangaluru MLA U. T. Khader, will be executed by the Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) and Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. Tenders were finalized, and work orders issued on March 25, 2026.
This development marks a significant step in enhancing the reliability of power supply in Mangaluru City Corporation, Ullal City Municipal Council, Someshwara Town Municipal Council, and Kotekar Town Panchayat. Historically, these areas have faced challenges with overhead power lines, prompting the need for a more resilient underground network.
Looking forward, the project is expected to commence shortly, with MESCOM overseeing the operations. The successful implementation could lead to similar initiatives across Karnataka, further strengthening the state’s power infrastructure.
