The water level in Mullaperiyar Dam in India has reached 111.35 feet as of May 25, 2026, raising concerns among local authorities and residents. The dam, located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, has a maximum permissible level of 142 feet. Currently, the inflow and discharge are both recorded at 240 cusecs.
In contrast, the Vaigai Dam’s water level stands at 22.44 feet against a maximum capacity of 71 feet, with no inflow and a discharge rate of 89 cusecs. The combined storage in the Periyar credit is reported at 1,192.91 million cubic feet (mcft).
Recent rainfall measurements across the region include 31 mm at Sathiyar Dam, 9.6 mm at Pulipatti, and lesser amounts at several other locations. These figures highlight the variability in precipitation that influences water management strategies in the area.
The current situation has heightened awareness regarding dam safety and water resource management in South India. Authorities are closely monitoring the levels, and any significant changes could prompt immediate action to ensure safety and sustainability.
