The Nepal Hindu-Muslim unrest that erupted in the country’s southern plains this week has left three people dead, prompting Prime Minister Balendra Shah to make a rare public appeal for peace. The violence, which began on Sunday, has spread across parts of Sunsari and Siraha districts, forcing authorities to impose strict curfews to prevent further clashes.
What Sparked the Nepal Hindu-Muslim Unrest
The trouble began in a village in Sunsari district, near the border with India, after a dispute broke out between Hindu and Muslim residents over loud music and religious flags during a Hindu procession. According to police spokesman Abi Narayan Kafle, officers opened fire in an attempt to disperse the crowd, killing two men in the process. A third man died on Thursday during a protest in the neighbouring district of Siraha, even though a curfew was already in effect there at the time.
Nepal is home to a Hindu majority, with Hindus making up roughly 80 percent of the population. However, the southern region of the country, close to the Indian border, has sizeable Muslim communities, and tensions between the two groups have occasionally flared in the area in the past.
Curfew in Nepal Extended to Contain the Violence
To prevent the unrest from spreading further, authorities have extended the curfew in Nepal across Sunsari district and several neighbouring areas. Police officials have reportedly been placed on alert across the affected region, with instructions to protect public property and to use minimal force wherever possible while managing the situation on the ground.
Kafle told reporters that police were actively working to restore normalcy, stating that officials in the field had been directed to prevent any further confrontations between the two communities while safeguarding public infrastructure that had already come under attack. Images from Siraha showed a shopping mall that had been set on fire and vandalised during the clashes, underscoring the scale of the disruption the unrest has caused to daily life in the region.
Nepal PM Balendra Shah Breaks Silence to Appeal for Peace
Nepal PM Balendra Shah, a former rapper who took office in March, has rarely addressed the public since becoming prime minister. However, he broke that pattern on Thursday with his first major national address, using the moment to call directly on citizens to help ease the tension gripping the south of the country.
“I, on behalf of the government, sincerely appeal to the citizens, civil society, religious communities, all respected leaders, all political parties and responsible media, to exercise patience and restraint and maintain peace, harmony, brotherhood and national unity,” Shah said in his address.
The prime minister also promised that the government would conduct a “completely fair and transparent” investigation into the violence, adding that anyone found responsible for the deaths and destruction would be held accountable through the justice system.
What Comes Next
With curfews still active in Sunsari and Siraha, the coming days are likely to determine whether the situation stabilises or escalates further. The government’s response, including the outcome of its promised investigation, will be closely watched both domestically and by neighbouring India, given the unrest’s proximity to the shared border. For now, officials continue to urge restraint from all sides as they work to restore order and prevent additional casualties.
