Pakistan has reiterated its support for Libya’s sovereignty and a Libyan-led political process as essential for achieving lasting peace and stability. This statement was made on April 22, 2026, during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) briefing on the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, described Libya as a ‘brotherly country’ and affirmed the country’s commitment to its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. He expressed support for the recent political and security developments in Libya, while acknowledging ongoing challenges in reaching consensus on electoral arrangements.

Emphasizing the importance of a Libyan-led political process, Ahmad stated that it remains the only viable path to peace. He noted Pakistan’s support for UNSMIL’s efforts, including structured dialogue aimed at bridging institutional divides.

On the security front, Pakistan welcomed the relative calm around Tripoli and urged continued engagement among Libyan stakeholders to advance security sector reform and unify military institutions. Ahmad highlighted progress in judicial and economic tracks, citing efforts to preserve judicial unity and a unified spending framework agreement.

Addressing sanctions, Ahmad clarified that measures such as asset freezes are not punitive but are meant to safeguard Libya’s resources for future benefit. Pakistan remains committed to collaborating with international partners to support a stable, secure, and united Libya.
