On May 22, 2026, Bangladesh’s Water Resources Minister Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anne announced plans to construct a permanent embankment on the Jamuna River in Tangail. This initiative aims to curb river erosion and protect the local population, starting in the next fiscal year.
During a meeting with residents affected by erosion at Mintu Memorial High School near the riverbank, Minister Anne stated that the project would fulfill a long-standing demand of the community and safeguard public interests. The embankment is expected to cost approximately Tk 50 crore.
The minister highlighted the severe impact of Jamuna River erosion on the region, causing significant distress annually. The government has developed a long-term strategy to address these challenges permanently, emphasizing the embankment’s role in regional economic development.
Anne further announced that additional development projects, including road construction, would be implemented to enhance the area’s overall infrastructure. The event was attended by Tangail Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar, and other dignitaries.
