West Bengal Election 2026: On May 4, 2026, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as a formidable contender in the West Bengal elections, leading in 207 of the 293 constituencies where votes were being counted. The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was ahead in 69 seats, with one confirmed win in Bhagawangola.

Mamata Banerjee, who has been at the helm since 2011, was leading in the Bhabanipur constituency after early trends showed her trailing against BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari. The election, held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, witnessed a record turnout of over 90%.

Historically, the TMC has dominated West Bengal politics, ending a 34-year Left Front rule in 2011. However, this election marks a significant shift as the BJP gains ground, a development closely watched by political analysts across India.

As counting continues, the BJP’s strong performance could alter the political landscape in West Bengal, with potential implications for national politics. The final results are awaited to confirm the new power dynamics.
