Andhra Pradesh Factory Explosion: On February 28, 2026, a devastating explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Vetlapalem village, Andhra Pradesh, resulted in the death of 20 individuals and injured 11 others. The incident occurred at Surya Sri Fire Works, located along the Godavari canal, around 2:10 PM. Following the tragedy, four senior officials were suspended for negligence.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu visited the site and confirmed the deaths, highlighting that 12 victims were from the Scheduled Castes community and nine were women. He announced a compensation of ₹20 lakh for each family of the deceased and assured full medical treatment for the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased.
The preliminary investigation suggested that a spark in a chemical drum led to the explosion, engulfing the premises in a massive fire. Local residents alleged that the factory was operating beyond permitted limits, though this is yet to be confirmed. The factory’s owner, Adapa Nani, is reportedly absconding.
The state government has promised a detailed inquiry and plans to enforce stricter safety protocols for firecracker manufacturing units. Measures include installing CCTV cameras and reviewing existing procedures to prevent such incidents in the future.
