Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has foiled another attempt by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) to push four people into Bangladesh through the Maheshpur border in Jhenaidah. The incident, in which the BGB foiled the BSF push-in attempt near the zero line, occurred around 1:30pm on Saturday near the Chapaltala Mazar area under the Kusumpur Border Outpost (BOP) of the Maheshpur-based 58 BGB Battalion.
How BGB Foiled the BSF Push-In Attempt
According to the BGB, a patrol team from Kusumpur BOP intercepted four people near the zero line as the BSF attempted to push them into Bangladesh from India. The attempt was reportedly made by the Mahendra Camp of the BSF’s 194 Battalion. The four people involved included two men, a woman and a child, though their identities were not immediately known. As of the latest information, they remained about 150 yards inside Indian territory from the zero line.
BGB officials said the matter had already been raised with the commander of the BSF’s 194 Battalion following the incident along the Jhenaidah border. In a press release, Assistant Director of the 58 BGB Battalion, Munshi Imdadur Rahman, said the BGB remains vigilant in protecting the border, preventing push-ins and illegal entry, and maintaining peace and order in border areas. He added that the BGB has heightened vigilance along the Maheshpur border to prevent any further attempts to push people into Bangladesh.
A Recurring Pattern Along the Bangladesh India Border
The latest incident is one of several push-in attempts reported along the Bangladesh India border in recent months. Similar attempts have previously been thwarted by the BGB in other border districts, including Chapainawabganj, where authorities detained individuals accused of assisting BSF-led push-in efforts. Bangladesh’s home minister has said that more than 2,369 people have been pushed into the country by the BSF since August 2024, underscoring the frequency with which such incidents have occurred along the shared frontier.
Despite periodic high-level meetings between the two border forces, including a director general-level conference and talks held in Delhi where both sides pledged to maintain peace and stability along the border, incidents such as the one near Jhenaidah continue to test that commitment. The BGB has consistently maintained that push-in attempts violate agreed border protocols and has said it will continue raising such cases directly with BSF battalion commanders whenever they occur.
BGB Vigilance Expected to Continue
With the BGB having foiled this latest BSF push-in attempt before it could be completed, border security officials indicate that patrols along the Maheshpur and wider Jhenaidah border will remain heightened in the near term. The incident adds to a growing list of similar cases along the Bangladesh India border, and the outcome of discussions between the BGB and the BSF’s 194 Battalion commander is likely to shape how future attempts are handled.
