A Delhi red alert is in effect after the national capital was lashed by intense rain on Friday, August 7, 2026, flooding low-lying areas, uprooting trees and leaving commuters stranded across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued the red alert as rain continued through the day, marking Delhi’s rainiest August day so far this year.
Why the IMD Issued a Red Alert for Delhi
The alert followed a spell of intense IMD heavy rainfall recorded in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Friday. According to the weather office, Safdarjung, Delhi’s primary weather station, recorded 59.2 mm of rain in that period, while Lodhi Road received 60.4 mm, the Ridge station recorded 57 mm, Ayanagar logged 26.2 mm and Palam received 16.9 mm. The IMD forecast moderate rain at many places and heavy rain at isolated spots, along with thunderstorms and lightning through the rest of the day.
Delhi Waterlogging Leaves Commuters Stranded
The downpour caused significant Delhi waterlogging, with several neighbourhoods left underwater. In south Delhi’s Fatehpur Beri and Valmiki Basti, residents waded through waist deep water, and in some cases, schoolchildren were carried across flooded lanes on a large plastic sheet used as a makeshift raft.
Widespread Delhi traffic disruption followed, with major stretches affected including the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, ITO, Wazirabad Road, Patel Road, Rohtak Road, Shankar Road, the Kirti Nagar stretch, the Delhi-Jaipur Highway, Peeragarhi and Shaheen Bagh. East Delhi was not spared either, with GTB Enclave, Dilshad Garden and GT Road also reporting heavy congestion as vehicles moved slowly through flooded roads.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi said it received numerous complaints of waterlogging and fallen trees from across the city. The Delhi Fire Service reported that at least nine houses collapsed and 16 trees fell since Thursday night, underlining the scale of damage caused by the sustained downpour.
Delhi Rain Forecast for the Coming Days
The Delhi rain forecast suggests some relief is on the way. Weathermen expect the rain to weaken on Saturday, with moderate showers and generally cloudy skies. The IMD has forecast generally cloudy conditions with light rain or drizzle on Sunday, and similar weather is expected to continue from August 10 to 13. Overall, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall over Delhi until August 10, suggesting the city will see a gradual easing rather than an abrupt end to the wet spell.
Rain Beyond Delhi
The system bringing heavy rain to the capital is also affecting other parts of India. The IMD has forecast very heavy rainfall in Odisha, along with heavy rain across Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka in the coming days. Authorities in these states have been advised to stay alert as the monsoon system continues to move across the region.
For now, residents in Delhi are being urged to avoid low-lying and waterlogged stretches, keep track of local traffic advisories, and follow updates from the IMD as the situation develops over the weekend.
