The Torrent Gas IPO is set to take a significant step forward this week, with the company expected to file updated draft papers for an initial public offering of up to 40 billion rupees, or roughly 418 million dollars, according to two people familiar with the matter. The filing would mark the first time the company’s IPO plans become publicly visible, after it opted to pursue the offering through the confidential route earlier this year.
Torrent Gas supplies piped natural gas to households and industries across eight states and one union territory in India. The company is part of the Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group, whose other listed businesses include Torrent Power and Torrent Pharmaceuticals. According to information on its website, Torrent Gas serves more than 200,000 households and over 1,300 industrial customers, while also operating around 500 compressed natural gas stations nationwide.
Confidential Filing Paves the Way for the Torrent Gas IPO
India’s markets regulator approved Torrent Gas’ confidential IPO filing in June, allowing the company to submit its draft papers for review without disclosing them publicly. This route is commonly used by companies that wish to gauge regulatory feedback before committing to a public listing timeline. The updated draft red herring prospectus expected this week would be Torrent Gas’ first IPO document made available to the public, offering the first detailed look at the company’s financials, shareholding structure, and offer composition.
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment on its IPO plans, and the exact size and structure of the offering could still change before the final prospectus is filed.
India IPO Market Regains Momentum
The planned filing arrives at a time when the India IPO market has picked up considerably after a subdued first half of 2026. Activity slowed earlier in the year as crude oil prices rose sharply amid the Iran war, creating uncertainty that kept several companies on the sidelines. Since July, however, 27 companies have either launched or announced initial public offerings, a figure that is now nearly matching the 28 recorded across the entire first half of the year.
Against this backdrop, the Torrent Gas IPO is expected to add further momentum to a primary market that is showing renewed investor appetite, particularly for companies operating in essential infrastructure and energy distribution.
City Gas Distribution Sector Draws Investor Interest
Torrent Gas operates within India’s city gas distribution sector, which covers the supply of piped natural gas to homes and businesses as well as compressed natural gas for vehicles. This sector has drawn steady investor interest in recent years as India works to expand access to cleaner fuel alternatives across urban and semi-urban areas. A successful Torrent Gas IPO would give public market investors direct exposure to this expanding segment, adding to a small group of listed companies operating in the space.
Should the listing proceed, Torrent Gas would become the third entity from the Torrent Group to trade on Indian stock exchanges, joining Torrent Power and Torrent Pharmaceuticals, both of which are already listed.
What Comes Next
With regulatory approval for the confidential filing already secured, the focus now shifts to the updated draft red herring prospectus, which is expected to set out the final structure of the offering, including whether it will involve fresh share issuance, an offer for sale by existing shareholders, or a combination of both. Investors and market participants are likely to watch closely for further details once the updated papers become public, particularly given the broader recovery underway in India’s IPO pipeline this year.
