A crude bomb recovery in South Keraniganj on Wednesday afternoon has added to a series of explosive seizures in and around the capital, after a team of the Special Response Battalion found four abandoned devices in a garage. The operation took place in the Shuvaddya area of South Keraniganj in Dhaka district, according to Dhaka Tribune.

What the Special Response Battalion Found

A team from the Special Response Battalion’s tenth unit, known as SRB-10, recovered the four unexploded crude bombs at around 5:10pm. The devices were found abandoned during a special drive carried out by an operational team of the unit’s Sadar Company. All four were recovered without having detonated, SRB-10’s senior assistant superintendent of police for media, Tapan Sarkar, said.

The reports reviewed did not say who left the devices in the garage, whether anyone was arrested, or how the bombs were disposed of after they were found. Those details may emerge as the investigation proceeds.

How the Drive Began

Sarkar said the operation was launched on the basis of secret information about the buying and selling of illegal drugs and other items in the area. In other words, the bombs were discovered during a drive aimed at a different kind of crime, rather than a search specifically for explosives. Such operations often turn up unexpected finds, and the discovery highlights how illicit materials can be stored alongside one another in out-of-sight premises such as garages and storerooms.

SRB-10 said it follows a zero-tolerance policy towards such crimes and remains committed to maintaining law and order and bringing offenders to justice. The battalion added that it would continue its efforts to prevent threats to public safety and the state while performing its duties professionally.

Why Unexploded Crude Bombs Remain Dangerous

Unexploded crude bombs are inherently unstable. Because they are typically improvised from loosely assembled materials, they can be sensitive to movement, heat or impact, and the people who handle them without training risk serious injury. For that reason, discoveries of abandoned devices are normally handled by specialist bomb disposal teams, and residents are advised to avoid touching suspicious objects and to alert the police immediately.

The location also matters. A garage is a place where vehicles, fuel and workers come and go, so devices left there could endanger anyone nearby even if they were not intended for use at that site.

A Pattern of Recoveries Across Dhaka

The find in South Keraniganj follows several similar recoveries in the capital in recent weeks. Dhaka Tribune reported that SRB-2 recovered and defused nine crude bombs found in an abandoned vanity bag in the Dhaka Udyan area of Mohammadpur after acting on intelligence about stored devices. Earlier, around 20 crude and petrol bombs were found abandoned at the former International Trade Fair ground in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, where the Special Response Battalion’s bomb disposal unit responded to a tip-off.

In September, police recovered 10 crude bombs from an alley in the South Dania area of Jatrabari, according to bdnews24, at a time when a string of crude bomb explosions and arson attacks was being reported across Dhaka. Detectives later arrested four people over blasts in front of Jatrabari Police Station and recovered four more unexploded devices from a building in Lalbagh, The Business Standard reported. Each case has its own circumstances, and nothing in the reports on the Shuvaddya find links it to those earlier incidents.

Crude Bomb Recovery in South Keraniganj: Public Safety

For residents of South Keraniganj, the immediate concern is whether other devices may be hidden in the area and who was responsible for storing these ones. Investigators will likely seek to trace the ownership of the garage, examine the devices for clues about how they were made, and establish whether they were intended for use in Dhaka or elsewhere.

The recovery underscores the role of intelligence-led operations in preventing harm before devices are used. Whether this crude bomb recovery in South Keraniganj leads to arrests will determine whether it becomes a lead on a wider network or remains an isolated discovery. In the meantime, authorities have urged the public to remain alert and report suspicious objects without handling them.
